Labelling and placing on the market

Here you can see how disinfection products should be labelled for marketing, what an authorisation from the DVFA covers and which products need to be approved by the DVFA.

The requirements for the labelling of approved disinfection products are presented in s§5 of Order No 859 of 23 August 2019 on the authorisation of disinfectants, etc. in food businesses, etc.

Disinfectants must be labelled with the following information:

  1. The phrasing “Disinfectant approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration under the journal number (indicate the file number)" and “The product is a (bactericide, fungicide or bactericidal and fungicide)"
  2. The name and address of the person to whom the authorisation has been granted.
  3. Instructions for use, including information on the scope, minimum and maximum use concentration.
  4. The words 'Do not store with food' and 'May only be stored in original packaging'.
  5. Information that surfaces coming in connection with food must be rinsed off with drinking water after disinfection.
  6. Information that the product is a combination product and, in this case, cleaning and disinfection shall be carried out as separate operations with associated rinsing.

Teat disinfection products must be labelled with the following information:

  1. 'Teat dip teat spray or other means for disinfection of teats before and after milking approved by the DVFA under the file number (please indicate the journal number)'
  2. 'Teat dip teat spray or other means for disinfecting teats before milking approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) under the file number (specify the journal number)'
  3. 'Teat dip teat spray or other means for disinfecting teats after milking approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration under the file number (please indicate the journal number)'
  4. The name and address of the person to whom the authorisation was granted have been issued.
  5. Instructions for use, including information on the area of use and maximum use concentration.
  6. The words 'Do not store with food' and 'May only be stored in original packaging'.
  7. Information that surfaces coming in connection with food must be rinsed off with drinking water after disinfection.
  8. The words 'may be used immediately after milking' only if the product is a teat dip, teat spray or other post-milking teat disinfectants;

The authorisation applies only to the specific product;

The DVFA's authorisation of disinfection products is linked to the information contained in the company's application, including specifications, scope and trade name. Thus, when the DVFA issues an authorisation the authorisation applies only to the specific product for which the authorisation is granted. Therefore, the trade name indicated by the applicant on the application form must be used.

Changes in the product or use requires a new authorisation

If the composition, scope, product name or similar of an approved product changes, a new authorisation from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is required. If a company wishes to market a product under a different name, a new application must be sent to the DVFA. However, it is possible to apply for a parallel authorisation if the original authorisation is less than five years old.

It is possible to market a product with the same name in different sizes (quantities) as long as the product is identical in composition, use, concentration of active substance, and only the quantity in the product is different.

Your active substance supplier must be on the Article 95 list

Whether you are a retailer, manufacturer, importer or distributor of biocidal products, the supplier of the active substance in your product must be registered in the so-called Article 95 List – the EU list of approved suppliers of active substances. Otherwise, your product is illegal to market.

Biocidal products may only be placed on the market after 1 September 2015 if the supplier of the active substances is on ECHA's list of suppliers of active substances. The requirement applies to all biocidal products containing or generating biocidal active substances. Products may be placed on the market only if the substance or product is listed in the Article 95 list in the product type to which the product belongs.
