A number of Danish animal welfare requirements go beyond the EU-provisions, for instance certain provisions regarding pigs, laying hens and cattle. Some provisions are national, for instance regarding protection of horses, where no specific EU-legislation exists.
Councils and committees concerning animal welfare
Three councils – the Animal Welfare Council, the Ethical Council for Animals and the Council concerning the Keeping of certain Animals (e.g. exotic animals) are established under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fishieries of Denmark, warranted by the Act on the Protection of Animals.
A national committee under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark considers drafts of new EU-legislation as well as draft recommendations from the Council of Europe. The members of this committee consist of agricultural organisations representing producers, research institutes, animal welfare societies and relevant ministries. The member organisations are expected to inform their members when new legislation has been adopted.
