Animal Welfare Control

The responsibility for the Danish animal welfare control lies with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and – as regards transport – the police.

Animal welfare control on farms
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has the overall responsibility for carrying out on-farm controls of animal welfare provisions.
If non-compliances are found, the reaction may be either a warning, an enforcement notice or a report to the police.

The Act on Animal Welfare lays down special obligations for all veterinarians in relation to animal welfare. The act states that serious offences regarding animal welfare must be reported to the police. If the offence is not serious, and if it is corrected, reporting to the police is not required. If offences, which are not serious, are not corrected, reporting to the police must also take place.

Animal welfare control during transport
Controls in relation to the protection of animals during transport are carried out by both the police, which is responsible for road side checks, and the Veterinary Offices, which are responsible for control at slaughterhouses and assembly centres.

Animal welfare control at the time of slaughter
Control of animal welfare at the time of slaughter is the responsibility of the Meat Inspection Unit from The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

Animal welfare reports
Results of the inspections are reported to the central office of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, which is responsible for national reports on animal welfare control required by the EU.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration issues a report every year, describing the results of the welfare control on-farm, at slaughterhouses and during transport. The reports can be found on the home page of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (see link on below).

The Veterinary Inspection Task Force
The Veterinary Inspection Task Force has been established within the framework of the Veterinary and Food Administration. This Task Force has various tasks regarding animal welfare and use of veterinary medicine. Examples are animal welfare inspections of livestock which are carried out as a theme control - for instance proper on-farm killing of animals has been a theme – or campaigns, for instance regarding transport of livestock .
