How to get authorization to work as a veterinary nurse in Denmark

If you wish to work as a veterinary nurse in Denmark you must have an authorization. If you are trained as, a veterinary nurse in a country outside of Denmark, your education must be equated with the Danish education as a veterinary nurses approved by the Ministry of Education and an assessment of your foreign education will therefore have to be made. An authorization gives you, among other things, extended access to use drugs on pets and horses excluded from consumption.

How to apply?

If your education has been evaluated as equated with the Danish education as a veterinary nurse approved by the Ministry of Education you must download and fill out the application form 

If your education has not been evaluated yet, you must send in an application to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration stating that you wish to apply for an authorization as a veterinary nurse. In the application, you must inform us about whether you have completed your training as a veterinary nurse specializing in small animals/pet animals or horses. Hereafter the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will ensure that an evaluation of your education will be made.

 

Attach documentation to the application

The application shall include the following information and documentation:

  • Proof of nationality (preferably a copy of relevant passport pages).

  • Name, address, eventual address in Denmark and contact-details such as phone number and e-mail address.

  • Diploma or other evidence of professional qualification allowing you to perform the profession as a veterinary nurse in your home country.

  • A description of the veterinary nurse education program, including total study time and the relationship between theoretical teaching and internship periods.

  • Documentation for relevant work experience may also be included.

 

Requirements for the documentation

The documents mentioned above must be either originals or certified copies of the original documents and it has to be in the original language as well as in a Danish or English translation. All copies of the documents must be certified by a public authority, an embassy, a trade union or similar and translations must be performed by a certified translator and it must be clear from the translations which documents there have been translated. Preferably, the translation must be attached to the document that it has been translated from.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will get back to you

The decision on whether or not to issue an authorization to work as a veterinary nurse will be made as soon as possible after all necessary documents have been received. Normally you can expect to get an answer from The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration within four weeks after all necessary documents have been received.

 

In case of rejection

If The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration decide to reject your application for authorization, you will receive a reasoned decision. If you disagree with the decision to refuse your application, you have the right to appeal. The deadline for submitting an appeal is four weeks from the date on which the decision was announced.

 

As a licensed veterinary nurse, you are allowed to perform different treatments

When you are a licensed veterinary nurse, you have the right to carry out the treatments set out in Appendix 1-3 in the Executive Order on Authorization of Veterinary Nurses.

You may not perform these tasks until you have received an authorization from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

 

Temporary or occasional pursuit

The following requirements apply for temporary service providers who wish to perform tasks reserved for authorized veterinary nurses and who is a national of an EU/EEA Member State or a country which the EU has concluded an agreement on the recognition of professional qualifications.

You have to notify the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration in advance.

The notification shall include the following information and documentation:

  • name, address, eventual address in Denmark and contact-details such as phone number and e-mail address.

  • Proof of nationality (preferably a copy of relevant passport pages).

  • Proof of professional title and information on which member state has issued the title.

  • An attestation from the competent authorities in the Member State of establishment certifying that the notifier is legally established in that member state for the purpose of pursuing the activities.

  • An attestation from the competent authorities in the Member State of establishment certifying that the notifier is not prohibited from practicing as a veterinary nurse.

  • Proof of the professional qualifications.

The notification is valid for one year at a time.
