Animal Welfare

According to the Danish Animal Welfare Act, animals should be treated carefully and properly and protected as well as possible from pain, suffering, fear, disablement and major inconvenience.

Animal welfare control

​The responsibility for the Danish animal welfare control lies with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and – as regards transport – also with the police.

Animal welfare legislation

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries is responsible for animal welfare legislation in Denmark, including implementation of EU-legislation on animal welfare. The primary legislation is the Act on the Protection of Animals (Dyreværnsloven).

Danish Centre for Animal Welfare

The aim of the Danish Centre for Animal Welfare (DCAW) is to contribute to the improvement of animal welfare in Denmark.

Farm animals

The Animal Welfare regulations order on minimum standards for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes

Slaughter of animals

Veterinary Officers control the provisions on movement, lairaging, restraint, stunning and slaughter of animals at the slaughterhouse.

Transport of animals

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is responsible for issuing authorisations to transporters of animal.
